The POWER of the Wolfberry
Wolfberries (also known as Goji berries, Chinese wolf berries or lyceum berries) pack a nutritious punch. These berries are found in China - in fact, the Chinese have been eating these for generations in the hopes of living longer and staving off sickness and disease.
What are the benefits?
First, they are a healthy source of macronutrients. What the heck does that mean? A quarter cup of these berries has 104 calories, one gram of fat, 3 grams of fiber, and 4 grams of protein. The real deal? The 18 different amino acids they contain.
Second, they are high in micronutrients. Again in that one quarter cup serving? 140% of your recommended Vitamin A intake, 20% of your Vitamin C intake, and 10% of your daily iron intake.
Third, they are a powerhouse source of antioxidants. Why are antioxidants important? Antioxidants are substances that may protect your cells against the effects of free radicals. Free radicals may play a role in heart disease, cancer and other diseases. A study published in 'Life Sciences' in 2004 verified the antioxidant impact of wolf berries. Researchers found that the wolf berry extract significantly reduced blood sugar, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels in rabbits just after 10 days. Just how powerful are the antioxidants in wolfberries? This graphic speaks for itself.
